Earlier this week, Castano held an open workout for the media and appeared relaxed and confident as he fielded questions afterward. In preparation for the rematch with Charlo, Castano said he and his camp worked on bringing a similar level of aggression but with an application of improved defense that limits Charlo’s ability to counter.
“We had a lot to learn from the first fight with Charlo,” Castano said. “One of the biggest things that I learned is to be more cautious at times while I’m in the ring. He’s powerful, but I’m going to bring my power, too. We learned from the first fight and we’re going to correct any errors we made.”
Castano also said that while he wasn’t surprised he and Charlo saw their first fight differently, he is in part motivated by his opponent’s insistence at new conferences leading up to the rematch that he won their initial meeting by four rounds.
“Our press conference was intense, and our exchanges definitely motivated me a lot,” Castano said. “He saw a different fight than I did if he saw himself winning eight rounds. I don’t know what he saw because I felt like I won by two points.”
Charlo used his speed, ring generalship and precise counterpunching to score points, and he had a couple of big late rounds. However, the power-punching Castano was the consistent aggressor and appeared to land a higher volume of damaging blows. Both fighters looked to be in trouble at various junctures.
When the scorecards were announced, Charlo appeared visibly frustrated while Castano smiled and shrugged. An immediate rematch seemed to be a logical next step to both settle the rivalry and from a business standpoint because a second encounter was sure to draw serious public interest based on the action-filled first fight.
