The 2022 Emmy Awards will air September 22 on ABC, and today, the nominations have been announced. In addition to the categories honoring some of the best TV series, actors, writers, and directors of the past year, the awards celebrate technical achievements. Donald Glover, Adele, Lizzo, and Stranger Things are among this year’s honorees.

Donald Glover was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Atlanta, putting him against Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, Barry’s Bill Hader, and The Great’s Nicholas Hoult, plus Steve Martin and Martin Short for their roles on The Only Murders in the Building. Atlanta earned two more nominations for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour) and Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series.

Among the nominees for Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety Series or Special is this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent. Other nominees in that category include Adele: One Night Only, the 64th Annual Grammys, and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The halftime show picked up additional nominations for Outstanding Music Direction, Outstanding Variety Special (Live), and Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special. In addition to the sound mixing nomination, Adele’s One Night Only special was nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special, Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Special. The special was broadcast around the release of her new album 30 and featured conversations between Adele and Oprah.

Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls series was nominated for six Emmys in all, including one for Outstanding Competition Program category against Ru Paul’s Drag Race, Top Chef, The Voice and more. In the Reality Program field, the show was also nominated for Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Directing. It earned additional nods for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program, as well as Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program.

The four-and-a-half hour Netflix documentary about Kanye West, jeen-yuhs, was nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. Read “New Netflix Documentary jeen-yuhs Is a Heartbreaking Ode to the Old Kanye.” The category included a nomination for Peter Jackson’s eight-hour Disney+ Beatles documentary series Get Back, chronicling the Let It Be sessions that led to the iconic rooftop concert. Netflix’s Stranger Things, which turned Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” into a surprising 2022 hit, is up for Best Music Supervision against Euphoria, The White Lotus, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Better Call Saul, and Ozark. The hit series was nominated for several other awards, including Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and more. Euphoria was also nominated for Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, and Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyles, among others.

Elsewhere among the nominations, When Billie Met Lisa, a Simpsons offshoot featuring Billie Eilish, is up for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program. Hulu’s series about Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson, Pam & Tommy, earned a nomination  for Outstanding Limited or Anthology series alongside Dopesick, The Dropout, Inventing Anna, and The White Lotus. The special One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga was nominated for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special, Outstanding Music Direction, and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Special.
