Darin Mann returned home from work Friday afternoon and made a horrific discovery inside his Charles County home, his brother Robin Mann said: five people dead from gunshot wounds, including his ex-wife and adult son and daughter.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that the grisly scene was a quadruple murder-suicide. Andre Sales, 28, is suspected of entering the home and shooting his ex-girlfriend, Sara Mann, 21; her brother, Kai Mann, 18; their mother, Sommaly Mann, 48; and a fourth man, Javon Watson, 23, of White Plains, who was inside the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Sales then shot and killed himself with a gun, which authorities said was recovered.

The motive remains under investigation. Police are examining whether the shootings were the result of an ongoing domestic dispute.

“What can you say?” Robin Mann said, groping for words to describe the tragedy. “They were full of life. Good kids.”

The sheriff’s office said that two young children were initially unaccounted for but that they were later found safe at another location.

Investigators and forensic teams are still processing evidence and interviewing family members and friends to establish a motive, the sheriff’s office said. A medical examiner will perform autopsies to establish the exact cause of death for each victim.

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to the home in the 3000 block of Wildflower Drive in La Plata, Md., shortly before 4 p.m. Friday for a report of a shooting. Authorities said the homeowner met them at the front door and said he had come home from work to find five people dead inside.

Detectives are still trying to determine when they were shot.

Diane Richardson, a Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, said investigators worked through Friday night at the large single-family home in the Agricopia neighborhood, piecing together what happened. The house, about 30 miles south of D.C., is on a residential street.

Robin Mann said his brother is a former doctor who now owns a painting business. Kai Mann worked with his father, and Sara Mann worked in the field of cosmetic surgery.

Authorities said that the incident was “isolated” to the home and that there is no threat to the public.

There were a large number of emergency vehicles at the scene Friday night, but by Saturday morning, it did not appear that any police remained there. People were seen hugging outside the home on Saturday morning but declined to comment.

Darin Mann and other people listed as living at the address could not immediately be reached by phone on Saturday morning.

One resident interviewed Friday described the street where the shooting occurred as calm, where “nothing ever happens.” She said she knew of nobody living in the home who appeared likely to be involved in such an incident.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
